My petpeeve!!!!! Do you agree?

O.K. one thing that I hate with one big passion is when these stupid dog snobs try to diss mixed breed dogs. I know that mixed breed dogs can be so much better then purebred dogs for many reasons!
(1) they do not have the health problems.
(2) they usually get the good traits from their parents and not such strong "bad traits".
The dog I have now is 1/2 mini beagle 1/4 shih tzu 1/4 yorkie and she is the best, smartest and cutest dog I have ever owned!
Oh yeah and one other thing that buggs the heck out of me is when people say that a mini beagle is not a breed. So what?!! A labradoodle isn't a real breed either but we still call it a labradoodle! Same goes for a puggle! Ufda!
People whine about these things whenever I ask a question on yahoo about my dog. I didn't ask for critsizm I asked for some help figuring our the answer to my question!
Thankyou in advance to everyone who agrees with me! :P
haha i completely agree with you.

The reason we "whine" is because those "doodles" and "puggles" are being bred by backyard breeders who often don't have a clue as to what they are doing and are breeding for MONEY!

Personally, I love my mutt, but he was a shelter dog. Not a fancy-schmancy dog that I paid a bad breeder for.

well. i think that dogs are good, all of them.
:)
A dog breed is a group of dogs that have very similar or nearly identical characteristics of appearance or behavior or, usually, both, primarily because they come from a select set of ancestors who had the same characteristics. Dogs have been selectively bred for specific characteristics for thousands of years. Initially the selections would have centered on domestication and useful behavior such as hunting ability. Later, dogs were also selected for attractive and distinctive forms, resulting in a vast variety of types.

Many traditional dog breeds recognized by the main breed registries are said to be "purebred". Only individuals whose parentage consists only of other purebred examples of the breed are regarded as part of that breed. This concept has caused controversy both because of the difficulty of regulation and because of the possible genetic consequences of a limited population (inbreeding). Recent work has been done to genetically classify the various breeds, with some surprising results regarding the estimated age and interrelations of the breeds.

Generally, before a type of dog is recognized as a true breed, it must be shown that mating a pair of that type always produces dogs that have the same characteristics as the parents, usually both in appearance and in behavior. This is known as breeding true. There are many issues concerning what is considered breeding true. For example, Flat-Coated Retrievers must always be black or dark brown; however, yellow coats occur occasionally in some litters. Kennel clubs do not recognize the yellow dogs as legitimate members of the breed; some breeders will kill the puppies rather than risk having the dog grow up, breed, and produce more of the undesired yellow color, perpetuating the undesirable gene; more often, today, such dogs are neutered and placed in homes as pets. As another example, a breeding pair of Belgian Shepherds of the Groenendael variety can produce puppies of the Tervuren (brown) variety; the AKC considers the varieties to be different breeds and, therefore, the brown puppies are invalid and undesirable dogs, whereas the CKC considers them simply to be different color varieties of the same breed.

See selective breeding for a detailed discussion on open versus closed stud books and some of the issues concerning purebreds.

I agree, I do, have 2 purebred boykin spaniels, and one purebred Jack Russel, but I do also know, that in the future, I would much rather get a mutt from the pound, than a $500 dog from a breeder. Mixed breeds seem to have so much more personality, and are better behaved that purebreds

Don't get me wrong, I love my 3 dogs more than anything, its just mixed breeds seem to make better behaved dogs.

WOW — mixed breed dogs do have health problems, and often are worse these days because the stupid breeders who produce these litters DO NOT HEALTH CHECK THE PARENTS! My mix has luxating patellas — easily avoided by NOT BREEDING A DOG WHO HAS THEM! And a mini beagle is not a breed — so call it a BEAGLE! Listen, you have NO idea what you are talking about… how old are you anyways?

I totally agree. I have two dogs and they where litterly 50 dollars each. Their both half german shepard and half huskey and they are so good looking it's inbelievable. One has the nicest eyes (no joke) and the other looks so much like a purebred huskey. Their also perosonality plus and they are filled with love. I think that all dogs are the same though. They all have different traits and talents, and ofcourse their all cute ;)

What they are trying to say is "I payed more for my dog because he is a pure bred." It makes them feel superior. I agree with you, mixed breeds have less health problems.

I disagree with you completely. We "dog snobs" also love our mixed-breed mutts as much as we love our purebreds.

Mixed-breeds are mutts, no matter what cutesy label you want to put on them. The bloodlines are not pure-anything, therefore, it's not a "breed", but a mix of breeds.

MY pet peeve is people who go off on a rant about something they know absolutely nothing about and don't want to hear good advice, even when they've asked for it.

I'll give your question a star so all my other "dog-snobby" friends will see it, and maybe they'll answer, too.

Have a nice day.

I disagree with you about 80%

First of all a mini beagle ISNT a breed. mini beagles are just poorly bred sickly runts.anyways they are just beagles I dont get why people would breed runts if they KNEW they had health issues.

I own a mix breed from a shelter and a lot of people have emailed me asking why I hate mix breeds so much. but I don't. when people ask questions like "are there any breeders thats sell designer peekapoo's??, it just sets me off. It makes me so furious that people are breeding a buying mutts when there are already enough homeless mutts in shelters that are desperate for a home. WHY MAKE MORE. People thnk that if they give a mutt a cute name they can sell it for thousands. People who breed mutts are in it for the money. anyone who breeds them is either a backyard breeder or a puppymill worker. Yes I know there are also plenty BYBs that sell purebreds too. Reputable purebred breeders breed to improove the breed and see the breed continue. a mix is not a breed.

I do disagree with people who say that mixes have healtth problems and bad manners. My mix is great! and he was rescued!

Don't agree with much of what you said.

I have no problem with mixed breeds and have adopted several from shelters. But your facts are way off.

Mixed breeds are just as likely to have genetic diseases as purebreds and in some ways more often. They often result from backyard breeders using poor breeding stock that never had genetic testing done or from random breeding by people who let their dogs run loose and breed with whatever. Both good and bad traits get passed on when this happens. The worst genetic defects I've ever seen was in a mixed breed dog at our shelter - joint problems galore and was arthritic, hip dysplastic and could barely walk at age 6.

Beagles come in 2 sizes but the smallest size is not referred to as mini beagle, but a 13" beagle meaning it is less than 13 inches in height. It is bred with another beagle and is not a mixed breed.

Labradoodle and puggle are stupid names for mixed breed dogs by designer dog breeders who want to cash in for big bucks and rip off people with stories about poodle crosses that don't shed (not true) and pug crosses without the breathig problems (not always true either).

Stark @ 3:37 pm

I have nothing against any specific breed of dog, whether it is a mixed breed or a pure breed. I just hate irresponsible breeders. Whether it is a puppy mill, or someone who has no idea what they are doing breeding pure breeds or mixed breed dogs. There are already way to many homeless animals in animal shelters, we really don't need to be breeding anymore. And I have nothing against reputable breeders, just irresponsible breeders. And I haven't really seen a lot of people on here who are against owning mixed breed dogs, just buying a mixed breed dog from a 'designer dog breeder.'

I agree a dog is a dog is a dog of course. In my experience of owning mutts I have had no health problems nor did my parents dog.
If we desex all *domestic* animals other than those used as official breed stock, then we start to lose genetic diversity and put the development of dogs(likely to be the last remnant of the wolf type, the way we go about things)solely into the hands of people who are selecting for *looks* - If you can't see what's wrong with this, have a look around the net for the manifest problems of pugs, great danes, rhodesian ridgebacks, etc. These breeds are pushed to extremes and their health is the worse for it. So, a degree of diversity is good, but we have to find an equitable and responsible way to achieve this.

Sorry, but I disagree with pretty much everything you say.

RE: "stupid dog snobs try to diss mixed breed dog"

> I have nothing against the dogs themselves. I do have big problems with people who purposely breed them though. There are plenty of mixed-breed (and sub-par quality purebreds too) in animal shelters, we don't need any more out there.

RE: "they do not have the health problems. "

> False. A purebred puppy from a reputable breeder will be HEALTHIER than a mix-breed. The parents will be tested for any possible genetic issues within the breed. Eyes CERF and joints OFA. And you KNOW what set of issues your breed is prone to. When you have 2 breeds making up your dog, you've just doubled the potential health issues you need to watch for.

RE: "they usually get the good traits from their parents and not such strong "bad traits". "

> This is completely untrue. Genetics just flat-out doesn't work this way.

RE: "one other thing that buggs the heck out of me is when people say that a mini beagle is not a breed. So what?!! A labradoodle isn't a real breed either but we still call it a labradoodle! Same goes for a puggle!"

> Sorry, but I don't call those mixed breed dogs any of those cutesy made-up names. They are all mutts.

If this makes me a "stupid dog snob", so be it.

You are sadly mistaken and misguided here. Go hang out at teh vets office for a few days adn just watch all the mixed breeds coming in that are not in good health and have genetic disorders. I do not know where you heard that but it is a perpetuating myth that is simply NOT true.
No one is saying that mixed breed dogs are no good.. What people are trying to get across is that they come from irresponsible owners and people who breed dogs just for the hellofit. ALL dogs have genetic disorders in their genes and no one can predict when those will express themselves but I assure you that mutts are not 'more healthy'.
Mixed breed dogs dominate the shelters. Mixed breed dogs are teh majority by far of the type of dogs that are put to sleep daily because no one wants them.
I have owned a mixed breed dog before and there isnt anything wrong with loving ANY dog.. Ignorant PEOPLE are the problem.. not the type of dog.

I have provided proof that you are wrong.

I would like to request that you provide some proof like documented evidence, to back up these statements:

(1) they (mixed breeds) do not have the health problems.
(2) they (mixed breeds) usually get the good traits from their parents and not such strong "bad traits".

If you can not provided documented evidence of these claims then what you are saying is nothing more than your opinion and if that is all it is, please do not try passing your opinion off as fact!!

Personal rants are against YA terms of service and furthermore, no one cares.

Stupid Dog snobs?? Because people like a breed for it's particular traits, and it's look. Like the fact that you know what you are getting, that the parents are health tested, you know where the dog comes from and everything else.. And this makes them Stupid Dog snobs??

If people that like purebreds are Stupid Dog snobs.. Then what are misinformed mixed breed owners called??

People that think that mixed dogs have no health problems, people who thing ( HAHAHA ) that a mixed breed dogs gets the good traits… What are those ones called??
I happen to hate it when people who are misinformed about mutts try to tell others a whole lot of things that just plain aren't true.

Here's the thing.. Purebred lovers will keep their dogs out of shelters, they will health test before they breed, they will breed health dogs with good temperament, proper structure, and will breed to their standard..

And the fair thing is, if you want these so called Stupd dog snobs to keep their traps shut.. Then you mixed breed breeders, should do the exact same thing.. Then no one can criticize you.. OK.. Mixed breed dog snob……….

No I don't agree with you.

You know what bothers me more? People that come on here and whine and complain and can't even string two sentences together using proper English. What bothers me even more is when they can't spell properly.

The final straw is when they only want answers that agree with them on whatever rant they have.

That's REALLY annoying.

Do whatever you'd like with your dogs. We'll do what we want with ours. You are entitled to your opinion and we are entitled to ours. No dog, mixed or purebred is "better". What are you in grade school?
